So many things. 1) Dog is adorable. 2) I walked away from my camping memoir for three years. I kept telling myself that I would work on it after I lost my job early in 2021, but when you're having a personal crisis, it is not the time to do a massive work. So I didn't. Now I'm getting back to it and I hope to work on a chapter a day in June, once school is out, so we'll see. 3) Tell us more about this Prison Journalism Project! That sounds amazing! (Because, you know, I need one more project to add to my plate.)
Thanks Sarah! I hear you. I also lost my job in 2020 after the pandemic and I tried to work on the very first (very badly written) version of my memoir but I just couldn't concentrate on it. Kudos to committing to a chapter a day in June. Keep me posted on how that goes.
Prison Journalism Project... yes! I will have an entire post about that but I didn't want to jump the gun until they publish my first piece. I still don't even have a name for the column. PJP is a non-profit that shares the voices of the incarcerated in a printed and online newsletter. My column will feature stories "from the other side of the wall," as the sister of an incarcerated person. Super excited about it. :D
I can totally relate to this! I noticed that when I try and force myself to write when I don't feel like it, my writing is no good... I also just listened to the We Can Do Hard Things podcast episode with Jennette McCurdy (author of I'm Glad My Mom Died), and she said the same thing. So I've been giving myself a lot of grace on those days where I don't write. I also remind myself that thinking about ideas, researching, reading are all part of the process!
The Prison Journalism Project sounds amazing. I’m involved in some organizing here in the Bay Area around prison reform and abolition. I am going to share that website with my group. Can’t wait to hear more about that.
Like Sarah, there’s so much here I want to respond to. :) I think stepping away from your writing work is so healthy and ultimately makes for a better piece of writing.

Pup is so cute!!!
This was an interesting look into the mind of a writer and their creative process. Thank you for sharing.
I can think of nothing more nourishing to my life as a writer than a big snuggly dog! 🧡🧡
Right? He has been such a joy. I think it should be mandatory for all writers to have a sleeping dog next to them when they write! :)
